The Rolex Explorer II reference 216570 was released to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the model and is a tribute to the original Rolex Explorer reference 1655. With a case size of 42mm, the watch is suitably tailored to modern tastes, and furthermore, has a 24-hour hand outlined in orange, in keeping with the reference 1655 “Freccione” watches.
What makes this Rolex Explorer II so interesting is the engraving found on its case, which is a rare commission fulfilled by the modern Rolex brand. The watches were made available by Rolex in London for serving members of the British Special Air Service, a special forces unit in the British Army. Founded in 1941, the regiment continues to be well-respected and carry out a range of highly sensitive and secretive operations.
The caseback features the winged dagger emblem of the division, with the regiment’s name, “22 Special Air Service”, similarly engraved. The caseback also features the serving member’s initials, along with their serial number. The SAS motto, “Who Dares Wins” is engraved on the side of the case. Only 100-150 pieces a believed to have ever made, making this example as rare as it is desirable, given its celebrated provenance. With its large, lume-filled hands and legible font, the watch embraces its identity as a tool watch, and is powered by the self-winding calibre 3187, which has been certified by COSC.
If sold within the United Kingdom, this Rolex Explorer II will be subject to 20% VAT.
