The reference
5170J in particular, harks back to much admired
Patek Philippe chronographs of the 1940s, with baton hands and a
pulsometric scale (reminiscent of early ‘doctor’s watches’) – classically sized, at 39mm in case diameter.
The
5170J-001 has an off-white, lightly-textured dial with two, uniform subsidiary dials at 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock respectively.
The dial is classically understated, balancing the pulsometer scale and inner minute track perfectly. It features applied baton markers and elongated Roman numerals (at 12 and 6 o’clock) - unique to the 5170J - and inspired by classics such as Patek Philippe's reference 130 and 1463. The watch displays five hands - hours, minutes, and seconds for the time, with seconds and minute hands for the chronograph; the latter of which - instantaneously jumping every 30 minutes. Overall, the dial layout is cleanly designed, with the chronograph highly-legible. The
5170J-001 also has a stop-seconds feature, for accurate synchronisation when the crown is disengaged.
The reference
5170J integrates
Patek Philippe’s very first in-house chronograph movement, boasting a number of patented innovations and technical refinements, designed to improve functionality and dependability, over that of previous Lemania-based calibres. The calibre
CH 29-535 PS movement is based on the classic architecture of column-wheel control – a hallmark of exceptional mechanical chronographs. It features a large, four-spoke
Gyromax balance-wheel with four poising weights, beating at a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 A/h), with a guaranteed power reserve of 65 hours (58, with an activated chronograph).
As with all contemporary
Patek Philippe watches, it has the
Patek Philippe seal, guaranteeing its accuracy to -3 and +2 seconds daily, keeping time better than the industry benchmark chronometer grade movements. The movement is beautifully finished, with exquisite chamfering on all angles, polishing and decoration, in the form of Geneva striping.
