Haldimann
Though François-Paul Journe might be the contemporary watchmaker most associated with mastering résonance, Haldimann has also experimented with the concept, which is a central feature of his H101 clock. Haldimann’s innovations also include a patented detached escapement, which delivers precision to one-tenth of a second per day, in addition to his signature flying tourbillon housed in a lyre-shaped case.
Creating only a handful of pieces each year, Haldimann’s true philosophy is a vision of watchmaking that is nearly extinct, as he is one of the few watchmakers who eschews the use of CNC machines, with everything being entirely handmade. This is particularly impressive with a complication like the tourbillon, which is especially delicate. Despite his traditional methods, Haldimann’s watches are refreshingly forward-facing, creating examples like the avantgarde H3, H9 or H13, which reimagine how time is seen.
We particularly admire Haldimann’s early work, where his first innovations were made, such as the flying central tourbillon and flying resonance, in addition to his time-only examples. Balancing both otherworldly touches with classical skill, the watches are not only elegant but take watchmaking into uncharted waters in terms of mechanics and design.
