The
Calatrava takes its name from the ornate Calatrava cross, first used on the marching banners of the knights who defended the city of Calatrava (Nuova Castiglia) in 1158. Although the name and
Calatrava cross were registered as a trademark on April 27th, 1887, it only started to appear more regularly on the crowns and movements of
Patek Philippe watches from the 1960s onwards.
The 37mm case has an elegant, flat bezel that is so identifiable to the
Calatrava series, and wears comfortably on the wrist due to its slim 7.68mm thickness. The crown is signed with a raised Calatrava cross. Inside the polished case back a frosted finish is found, with the
Patek Philippe hallmarks and the serial numbers engraved.
The two-tone, silver, sector-dial has applied Breguet numerals, and makes use of a range of finishes. "PATEK PHILIPPE" and "GENEVE" are referenced at twelve o'clock, whilst elegant feuille hands show the hours and minutes. Meanwhile the sub-seconds register at six o'clock is stepped slightly from the dial, and has printed Breguet numerals at ten-second increments. This elegant, timeless wristwatch comes on a black, alligator strap from
Patek Philippe and signed, platinum tang buckle.
Powered by a manually-wound calibre 215PS (signed “Patek Philippe Geneve“), the movement is decorated with Côtes de Genève embellishment and bears the Geneva Seal. The 18-jewel calibre is smaller than the case, making use of a large and decorated movement-ring, beating at a rate of 28,800 A/h.
Viewings can be arranged in Central London by appointment.
