Often described as one of the more adventurous models to be initially re-introduced as part of the CPCP range, the Asymétrique is a classic Cartier design, which has captured the imagination of collectors for years. Initially known as the Tank Oblique, it was envisioned for drivers in 1936. The parallelogram shaped case features a dial that is slanted diagonally, such that when their hands were up on a steering wheel, the dial was oriented upright. It was later renamed the Tank Asymétrique, taking several different shapes over its lifetime.
This limited edition Tank Asymétrique reference 2488 was released in 1996, with only 300 examples produced in yellow gold. Its design draws inspiration from the 1936 "Parallelogram" edition. The dial's striking layout is complemented by its off-white, guilloché dial and a subtle Paris signature above 6 o'clock, as well as blued-steel hands. As opposed to its modern variants, the case possesses traditional spring bars, and is a polished yellow gold. Cartier's signature sapphire cabochon is placed within the crown, and the watch is a tasteful vintage size, at just 24x34mm.
The Tank Asymétrique has had an enduring legacy, with modern editions being released in 1999 to commemorate the Macau Handover, as part of the 2006 Collection Privee Cartier Paris, and most recently within the 2020 Cartier Privé Collection. The heritage and vintage charm of this example is an excellent find for any collector searching for vintage Cartier pieces.
